Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey. It is not just a place for those who like cities, nightlife, and local culture, but also an important starting point for exploring this part of Turkey- it is the main city on the Aegean coast of Minor Asia. From here, you can go north to Troy, south to Ephesus, east to Pamukkale, and other places in Western Turkey. The city itself has thousands of years of history and is full of interesting places and activities. So, it is very likely that you would like to spend a longer time here. The question is: where to stay in Izmir, and what are the best hotels there?

Where to stay in Izmir: Useful tips
Izmir is a large city. It embraces the Bay of Izmir from north, east, and south. At the same time, most of its places of interest are located in its old part, east of the bay. The north, the east, and the south consist mostly of new districts.
So, you have to consider not only the price and the comfort of the property to stay, but its location is important too. It depends on what is your itinerary. If you want to explore the places of interest in the old town, look for a place in this area. But if you are going to take a flight from Izmir to another destination, better choose a place in the south, not far from the airport.
Concerning the price and quality, Izmir is not different than most of the cities in Turkey. The cheapest options (with the best price vs. quality) are the Airbnb properties, especially if you are looking for budget places. Hotels are a bit more expensive. The cheap ones are usually not proper for families with children because they don’t have rooms for more than 2 people.
But at the same time, good hotels offer better experience, comfort, and relaxation. So, in this article, we will focus on hotels.
Let’s divide Izmir into four main location areas, depending on your purpose of staying in the city.
The old part of the city
This is the most popular area in Izmir. Most of the tourist attractions are here. The main administrative district here is called Konak, and the old part of Konak is Alsancak. Here, you can walk along the seacoast, in the seaside park called Kordon, you can visit the most iconic landmark with the Izmir Clocktower- Konak Square. You can also explore the ancient Smyrna and the Archaeological Museum. And you can stroll around the colorful streets of Kemeraltı.
All of these places are within walkable distance (although with a bit more walk). So, if you find a place to stay in Konak, it would be a very convenient option. You don’t need to travel by bus, taxi, or other transport and wait for the traffic lights and be stuck in a traffic jam. In fact, there are some narrow streets where you can only walk.
So, let’s take a look at some good options to stay. The hotels can be divide into budget, middle-range, and luxurious. Budget hotels are somewhere between 20 and 45 USD, middle-range- from 45 to 120 USD, and luxurious- more than 120 USD.
- Location: Right beside the Smyrna Agora, in the old streets of Kemeraltı
- Rate: Exceptional- 9.0
- Highlights: It has a garden, a restaurant, and free parking. Pets allowed.
Besides its excellent location, it is verified to be very clean. Yes, it is cheap, so don’t expect more than just normal rooms, but they are clean and you can feel the freshness.
Vatan Otel offers 4 types of rooms: from budget single rooms to standard triple rooms. The staff is very nice and professional. They offer free tea.
Cons: no WiFi. A bit difficult to drive a car in this part of Izmir.
- Location: In the old streets of Alsancak, not far from Kordon.
- Rate: Excellent- 8.6
- Highlights: Free WiFi, rental bike, terrace and balcony.
Hostels are great places for travelers where they can meet each other, and enjoy local traditional design with “adventurous” nuance. Shantihome Hostel is not an exception. Here you not only can share your travel experiences with others, but also enjoy the local atmosphere around it- the narrow streets of Alsancak with its restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, and more.
The hostel offers various types of rooms, but not for more than 4 persons (except for one room for 8 people). Some of the rooms have their own toilets, while other rooms share a common toilet.
Cons: Like most of Alsancak, if you come by car, it can be a bit difficult to reach the place and to find a parking lot.
Bragecam Rezidans Otel
- Location: In the south of the center, between the Asansor and the Archaeological Museum
- Rate: Excellent- 8.9
- Highlights: Apartments, free WiFi, free parking, business facilities
Usually, most of the hotels (especially the budget ones) offer just rooms. But Bragecam Rezidans Otel offers apartments. There are four types of apartments- with two bedrooms, with one bedroom and one living room, or just one bedroom with a kitchen and a balcony.
It is located at the southern end of the center and reveals a beautiful panoramic view of the Bay of Izmir. It has an excellent and helpful staff. And, as already mentioned, it is very convenient for those who come by car.
Helen Inn Hotel
- Location: East of the Cultural Park
- Rate: Very good- 7.9
- Highlights: free WiFi, Airport shuttle
Helen Inn Hotel is known for its high rate for couples- it is a favorite budget place for those who want to be just he and she. But apart from that, it offers a significant variety of rooms- from a budget double room (with one double bed) to an apartment.
Of course, the prices are different and those for the apartments already belong to middle-range prices. But this room variety makes Helen Inn Hotel also a good option for families with children.
Cons: It is difficult to find a parking lot in this area. Also, some people consider the surroundings too boring.
Lotus Garden Hostel
- Location: Between the Cultural Park and Smyrna Agora
- Rate: Excellent-8.2
- Highlights: free WiFi, garden, airport shuttle, bike rental, evening entertainment
This is a more “luxurious” hostel. Like every hostel, it is also designed for backpackers and other types of travelers, and again, it is a good place for finding new traveling friends and sharing travel experiences. Besides, as mentioned above, it offers regular parties.
Lotus Garden Hostel offers various types of rooms, from double rooms like a “normal” hotel to six-person dormitory rooms. It has a shared kitchen. You can rent a bicycle and roam around the most attractive part of Izmir which is around the hostel.
Cons: some travelers feel the surrounding area is not so safe, although it is in the center.
Hotel 86 by Katipoğlu
- Location: North of Kemeraltı Market, not far from Konak Square
- Rate: Excellent-8.6
- Highlights: free WiFi, free parking, business center, restaurant
Although this hotel is middle-ranged, it is almost like a luxurious property. It is established in a tall building like the big classical hotels and offers a restaurant, breakfast, a business center, and spectacular views of Izmir from the higher floors.
The hotel offers several types of rooms, proper for single persons, couples, or families. The staff is friendly and professional, and you can communicate with them in English and German.
And what the guests most like is its location- not only close to the best places of interest but also in a safe and lively area.
Met Boutique Hotel
- Location: Southwest of the Cultural Park, not far from Kemeraltı Market
- Rate: Exceptional 9.0
- Highlights: tour desk, bike rental, shuttle service, free parking
This is a hotel with a very modern look. It is clean and conformable. Every facility that it has is glamorous and luxurious- the rooms, the bar, the restaurant with the excellent breakfast, delicious lunch and dinner, and everything else.
Again, it is in an excellent location, providing a king’s relaxation in the center of Izmir. It has normal rooms, there is not too much choice about it but all of these rooms are spacious and extremely comfortable. And the staff is outstanding. Travelers say that is it great for its price.
Izmir Marriott Hotel
- Location: At the seaside, near Konak Pier
- Rate: Exceptional 9.2
- Highlights: swimming pools, bike rentals, spa facilities, fitness center
This hotel is at a higher level of luxury. It has 5 stars, and it already provides more than just accommodation- spa, fitness, steam rooms, two swimming pools, and more. In addition, it has a restaurant, a snack bar, and a panoramic terrace.
This terrace is worth it since it is located almost at the coast of the Bay of Izmir. It offers various types of rooms, from twin rooms with city views to executive king rooms with city views and lounge access.
Swissotel Grand Efes
- Location: In the south of Alsancak, near the seaside.
- Rate: Exceptional 9.1
- Highlights: sport & spa facilities, business center, beautiful garden
Swissotel Grand (Büyük) Efes is one of the most elite and luxurious hotels in Izmir. Being a 5-star hotel, in its great location, it offers everything that you need to make you feel like a king of Izmir.
It offers two swimming pools, spa facilities, a massage, a tennis court, a fitness center, a business center, a restaurant, a snack bar, and a picturesque garden. In addition, it has a great variety of rooms, and all of them are enough spacious, with great views, especially from the higher floors.
The north- Karsiyaka
This is mainly the area north of the Bay of Izmir. It is more modern, with more parks and residential housing complexes. There are not too many places of interest- the most interesting places are the northern seaside and the hills nearby.
Of course, you can still enjoy this area, but if you want to explore the landmarks of the city, you have to travel by car or city transport (including local ferries), which may waste your time.
But if you want to find a calmer and more silent area, Karsiyaka and the districts around it are better than the center. Also, it is more convenient if you plan to go northward by car on the next day- to Pergamon, Canakkale, or Istanbul.
There are not many properties in this area. Most of them are apartments, and there are only a few hotels. Almost all of them are middle-range. Let’s see the most popular of them.
Best Western Premier Karsiyaka Convention & Spa Hotel
- Location: Near the junction of the roads D550 with E87 and Mavisehir Railway Station
- Rate: Very good – 7.5
- Highlights: good city view, indoor swimming pool, free parking
This is the best of the few hotels located in this part of Izmir. In addition to the standard hotel facilities, it also offers a sauna, spa, massage, beauty services, and an indoor swimming pool. It has a business center and shuttle service, which can be very useful keeping in mind the long distance to Adnan Menderes Airport.
Cons: although it shows a great variety of rooms, in reality, they are almost the same. Some travelers complain about the cleanliness and the friendliness of the staff. But the biggest problem is the location, however, you don’t have too many options in this part of Izmir.
The east- Bornova and its surroundings
This area is located east of the old center and is mostly hilly. It consists mainly of modern housing complexes and former villages. Again, there is not much to see and explore here, but it is a good starting point for traveling deep into the mainland of Turkey. For example, if you are going to Pamukkale the next day and don’t want to waste time in a traffic jam, find a place to stay in Bornova.
Again, there are not too many options here, but let’s see some.
Park Ulusoy Hotel
- Location: Near Ege University and Road 881 to Pamukkale
- Rate: Excellent- 8.4
- Highlights: free parking, balcony, family rooms
This is a good budget hotel for its price. But again, keep in mind the location- it is not so convenient if you want to explore the city! Better go there if you are going to Pamukkale on the next day by car.
The good thing is that the hotel offers family rooms (while, again, many budget hotels in Turkey don’t have family rooms). Inside the hotel, not everything is perfect, and various tourists complain about various little things, but for one night, strategically, it is worth staying.
- Location: A bit closer to the center and Road 881 to Pamukkale
- Rate: Very good – 7.7
- Highlights: ATM service, rental car
This is a typical middle-range hotel, with its standard features. As mentioned above, it is one of these rare hotels in Turkey that offer ATM and rental cars. Most of its rooms are only for single persons and couples, but there are a few that are proper for families. It also has a nice lobby café.
Cons: its WiFi is of low quality, at least according to many visitors.
- Location: North of Ege University, near the roads to Istanbul and Pamukkale
- Rate: Excellent – 8.6
- Highlights: restaurant, café, garden, party space
This place is like a palace of a king. It is a luxurious villa type of hotel with high-quality spacious rooms, some of them with Jacuzzi. Probably the most attractive part is the garden with the restaurant. It is designed for banquets or parties. Some couples arrange their wedding parties in Villa Levante.
Cons: Wedding parties on the weekends. They can disturb travelers.
The south- from Teleferik to Gaziemir
This is the rest of the urban Izmir, located along the southern coast of the Bay of Izmir, as well as between the hills in the south. Teleferik is the main southern seaside district, and Gaziemir is the southernmost urban part of Izmir, established between the hills. And there are more districts around these two.
This area is proper for those who have to go to the nearby Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, or for those who want to travel to Cesme or Kusadasi and Ephesus on the next day. Also, Teleferik is a nice place, not far from the nearest beaches of Izmir.
However, there are not too many budget options here. Yes, there are, but they are relatively new, or with not-so-good quality. So, let’s start with the middle-range hotels.
Tav Airport Hotel Izmir
- Location: Exactly at Adnan Menderes Airport
- Rate: Excellent – 8.8
- Highlights: ATM service, business center, rental car, and of course- the airport
This is an airport hotel, located inside the international terminal of Adnan Menderes Airport. Obviously, it is proper mainly for those who have just arrived by plane or have to depart by plane on the next day. And its quality is excellent for its price.
Tav Airport Hotel offers rooms for single persons, couples, and families. The rooms are spacious and clean. In addition, there is a good restaurant with excellent Aegean and Turkish cuisine.
Ofuro World Hotel Spa
- Location: Behind Adnan Menderes Airport
- Rate: Excellent – 8.9
- Highlights: spa & wellness center, rental car, garden
If you want to be close to the airport, but not exactly inside it, and of course if you are looking for something higher than a budget property, this hotel is for you. It is designed not only for convenience for the next flight but also for comfort. Its most significant features are its spa and wellness center and its garden. It also offers a delicious breakfast. The rooms of this hotel are proper for single persons, couples, and families.
Hyatt Regency Izmir Istinye Park
- Location: In Teleferik, on the southern coast of the Bay of Izmir
- Rate: Exceptional – 9.5
- Highlights: sport & spa facilities, airport shuttle, great sea view
Hyatt chain is famous for its luxurious hotels all over the world, and this one is no exception. It is a 5-star hotel, one of the best in Izmir, located in a great place on the southern coast of the Bay of Izmir with a spectacular sea view. It offers a fitness center, an outdoor swimming pool, a business center, a glamorous bar, and extremely comfortable spacious rooms.
Other accommodation options: Airbnb
Airbnb properties can be a good alternative to hotels. In such a place, you can get closer to the local people. At the same time, as mentioned above, they can be slightly cheaper. Besides, they can be the only option for budget families with children since many budget hotels don’t offer rooms for families.
There is a great variety of Airbnb properties in Izmir, from budget to luxurious, some of them more expensive than a 5-star hotel (btw, some Airbnb’s are also registered on Booking or Agoda- you can find them there, and the price can be slightly different).
However, it is advisable to research them more than hotels. Look for reviews from other travelers, and if necessary, send messages to the host, otherwise, there is a risk of scam. If anyway you choose to stay in an Airbnb property, press the button below:
In general, that’s the best of the properties in Izmir. Of course, there are many other options, some of them also very good, others- not so good for its price. Some properties are brand new and still not verified with customer reviews. And there are also some fake properties or scams that you’d better avoid.
So, to recap- if you want to spend the night in Izmir- check out our proposals, or check the reviews for the other options. If there are no reviews yet, send a message to the property, talk to them, and be careful.
Finally, Izmir is a big city with a lot of tourist attractions. So, spend more than one day there, resolve your accommodation, and enjoy exploring this amazing city!
