Overland Route Fuel Calculator
Use this simple overland route fuel calculator to estimate how much fuel you may need for a long surface journey, road trip, motorcycle route, campervan route or vehicle-based expedition.
Enter the route distance, your vehicle’s real-world fuel consumption and the expected fuel price per liter. The calculator will estimate the total fuel needed and the basic fuel cost of the route.
Calculate your route fuel cost
Planning the full route budget?
This fuel calculator estimates only one part of the journey. If you want to plan the full cost of an overland or surface route — including ferries, tolls, accommodation, food, border fees, repairs, other transport and emergency buffer — use the Overland Route Cost Planner Lite.
What this calculator includes
This free version calculates only the fuel layer of an overland route:
- route distance;
- fuel consumption;
- fuel price per liter;
- estimated fuel needed;
- estimated fuel cost;
- fuel cost per 100 km;
- fuel cost per km.
What this calculator does not include
This is not a complete expedition budget planner. It does not calculate ferries, tolls, border fees, visas, permits, accommodation, food, repairs, vehicle wear, insurance, storage, shipping or route interruption costs. If your route changes from land to water — for example through ferries, islands, rivers, lakes, cargo shipping or boat sections — you also need to think about land-water route continuity.
Planning a one-way route with your own vehicle?
Fuel cost is only one part of the problem. If your route does not return to the starting point, you also need to think about vehicle continuity, storage, resale, shipping, borders and route breaks.
